India, Sept. 4 -- For many students, the most memorable lesson from school may have nothing to do with a textbook. It could be a teacher who encouraged them after a poor result, helped them discover a talent or simply gave them confidence when they needed it most. That personal connection is at the heart of Teachers' Day, which India observes every year on September 5.

Teachers' Day 2026 will be observed on Saturday, September 5. The date coincides with the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, philosopher, scholar, academic and India's second President. India began observing the day as Teachers' Day in 1962 after Radhakrishnan suggested that his birthday should instead become an occasion to honour teachers.
