India, Aug. 9 -- Jorge Messi, the father of Lionel Messi, has passed away at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina. The Messi family confirmed that he breathed his last on Friday night following a prolonged illness. He had spent his final months between his home and a medical centre, surrounded by his wife Celia and children.

Jorge was a central figure in Lionel Messi's life and football career. He supported his son from his early days in Argentina. He remained closely involved as Messi started training at La Masia and went on to become the most decorated footballer in history. He also served as Lionel's agent for several years.
