India, Aug. 27 -- South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has called for tighter police accountability after four people reported missing on the resort island of Jeju were found dead within three days, in a scandal that has exposed how a single officer allegedly closed hundreds of missing-person cases without confirming whether those involved were safe.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Lee said police already held enormous authority within the state and that oversight needed to match it, telling ministers that "responsibility must be strengthened in proportion to the size of the authority."
