India, Sept. 7 -- Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, a fresh diplomatic controversy has emerged after the UN General Assembly backed a new world map projection. Ukraine objected to the way Crimea was depicted separately from the rest of the country, arguing that the representation undermines its territorial integrity. Ukrainian lawmaker Kira Rudik reacted sharply, saying, "Crimea is Ukraine. Shame." The map resolution, which promotes the Equal Earth projection, was approved with 164 votes in favour, while Ukraine abstained over the depiction of its occupied territories.
