India, March 27 -- Petrol and diesel prices in India remained largely unchanged on Friday, March 27, 2026, despite the central government sharply cutting excise duty on fuel. In an effort to ease the burden on consumers amid rising global crude prices, the Centre reduced the special additional excise duty on petrol to Rs.3 per litre from Rs.13. It removed it entirely on diesel, making it zero.
Despite this, most state‑run oil companies did not lower pump prices today, keeping retail rates stable in major cities. Experts say this reflects the ongoing pressure of higher crude costs and efforts by oil firms to manage losses rather than pass savings directly to buyers.
