India, July 31 -- A routine workday deep inside a coal mine in Pakistan's Balochistan province turned into one of the country's deadliest mining disasters in recent years when a powerful methane gas explosion tore through underground tunnels near Quetta. The blast killed at least 32 miners, trapped several others beneath debris, triggered an intensive rescue operation, and renewed concerns over the poor safety standards that continue to haunt Pakistan's coal mining industry.

Authorities have ordered an investigation while labour groups are demanding strict action against those responsible.
