India, May 11 -- Padmini Ekadashi is one of the most auspicious dates on the Hindu calendar. And this year in May, it is occurring after a three year gap.

An Overview

According to one ancient legend, a Queen named Padmini had no children and faced trouble conceiving. She then sought the advice of Sage Anasuya, who advised her to keep a rigorous Ekadashi fast. Queen Padmini kept the fast and prayed to Lord Vishnu, who was pleased with her penance and granted her a son.

While others believe that 'Padmini' actually derives from 'Padma', which is the Sanskrit word for lotus. Hence, it is also known as Kamal Ekadashi. Lotus is also the main flower that is used to worship Lord Vishnu.
