India, July 6 -- Heavy rain continued to batter Mumbai on Sunday, forcing authorities to shut schools and colleges across the city on Monday, July 6. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the holiday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next 24 hours. Wind speeds could also reach 60 to 70 kmph. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students as more rainfall is expected throughout the day. The holiday applies to all schools and colleges run by the state government, private institutions and the civic body.
