India, July 6 -- Mount Etna is experiencing an intense, high-energy eruptive phase that has disrupted local travel and triggered a Red Aviation Alert. The activity, centered at the Voragine summit crater, has been ongoing for over nine consecutive days, sending spectacular orange lava flows down its eastern slopes and a massive column of volcanic ash up to 1.5 kilometers (and reports of up to 15 kilometers) into the sky.
