The former Real Madrid star parted ways with the Spanish giants when his contract expired in June. His availability could have offered Michael Carrick another option at left-back, where United remain short of natural depth.

However, the club's current recruitment strategy appears to rule out a move for the 34-year-old unless an injury crisis changes the situation significantly during the season.
