India, July 17 -- Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI is preparing to launch its next-generation large language model, Kimi 3 (K3), which is expected to significantly narrow the gap between open-weight AI models and the world's leading proprietary systems. According to a Financial Times report citing sources familiar with the matter, Kimi K3 could perform on par with or even surpass Anthropic's Opus 4.8 on several benchmarks.

The upcoming release follows the success of Moonshot's Kimi K2 series, which earned praise for delivering frontier-level AI capabilities while remaining open-weight. If the reports prove accurate, Kimi K3 could become China's most powerful open-weight AI model yet.
