Whisenant, who gained widespread recognition after completing one of the famed route's toughest challenges in under three hours, reportedly died on August 3 following an accident in California's Sierra Nevada.

The Mammoth Lakes-based climber's death was confirmed by the Tulare County Coroner's Office, according to reports citing local authorities. While news of his passing has been reported, officials have yet to disclose details about the accident or what led to his death.
