India, Aug. 23 -- Southern California is sweltering through its hottest stretch of the summer so far, with extreme heat warnings and advisories blanketing much of the region through Saturday evening as inland temperatures climb well past 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service said the Woodland Hills neighbourhood of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley reached 109 degrees on Thursday, among the highest readings recorded in the region this year, as an expanding area of high pressure over the desert south-west combines with weakening onshore flow to trap heat across the Southland.
