India, May 26 -- Heatwave in France has turned deadly as the country has reported seven deaths linked directly or indirectly to the intense heatwave that has affected large parts of western Europe. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said five of these deaths were drowning incidents.

While speaking to French television channel TF1, Bregeon said the exact causes of death would become clearer once the heatwave ends, as authorities are still studying the full impact of the extreme weather conditions.

"What I can say today is that there have been seven deaths linked directly or indirectly to the heat," Bregeon said.
