India, Oct. 1 -- Major spoilers ahead for the ending of Netflix's East of Eden.

Netflix's East of Eden ends where its entire story has been heading: with a family forced to confront the question of whether people are destined to repeat the sins of those who came before them. Zoe Kazan's seven-episode limited series adapts John Steinbeck's classic novel, following Cathy Ames, Adam and Charles Trask, and eventually Adam's twin sons, Cal and Aron. The finale brings their stories together through death, guilt, forgiveness and one crucial word: Timshel.

So, what happens to Cathy? Does Aron die? What happens to Adam and Cal? And what exactly does Timshel mean?

Here's the East of Eden ending explained.
