India, May 15 -- A powerful earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Japan on Friday evening, shaking several cities across the Tohoku region and briefly disrupting high-speed train operations. Authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat and reported no immediate casualties or major structural damage after the tremor.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured 6.7 in magnitude and occurred near the coast of Ofunato in Iwate Prefecture on Japan's main island of Honshu.

The quake hit at around 8:22 pm local time and was felt across multiple prefectures in northeastern Japan, prompting emergency earthquake alerts and precautionary safety measures.
