India, Sept. 5 -- The celebrations do not quite end when Janmashtami comes to a close. As the devotional mood of Krishna's birth celebration gives way to the energy of the following day, streets across Maharashtra prepare for a very different kind of celebration - one filled with drums, cheering crowds, human pyramids and the breaking of a clay pot.

Dahi Handi 2026 will be celebrated on Saturday, September 5, one day after Krishna Janmashtami on Friday, September 4. The festival brings Govinda teams together to form tall human pyramids and break a handi filled traditionally with curd or other festive items. The celebration draws from the childhood stories of Lord Krishna, especially his playful fondness for butter and curd.
