India, Sept. 6 -- With preparations for the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections gaining momentum, the Congress faces a formidable challenge from the ruling BJP but still cannot be ruled out of the race for power. While the BJP currently enjoys an early advantage, the Congress could make the electoral contest significantly more competitive if it succeeds in strengthening its organisation, fielding winnable candidates and containing factionalism within the party. The Congress was reduced to just 19 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, against the BJP's 47 seats. In terms of vote share, however, the gap between the two parties was considerably narrower.
