India, Aug. 13 -- The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has escalated rapidly, with the death toll officially surpassing 2,000 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the epidemic a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). Over 4,381 confirmed cases have been recorded, making this the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record and the country's largest-ever epidemic. The speed of transmission is unprecedented: while it took nine weeks to reach the initial 1,000 deaths, the death toll doubled to 2,000 in just three additional weeks.
