India, Oct. 2 -- When Christa Pike's scheduled execution in Tennessee became the focus of national attention, the spotlight also returned to the two people who were with her when 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer was killed in 1995. More than three decades later, their paths have taken very different turns.

Pike, now 50, survived two rounds of lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on September 30, 2026. The execution was halted after she remained alive, and she was taken to a hospital. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee subsequently ordered an independent review and suspended the state's remaining scheduled executions for 2026.
