India, Nov. 4 -- British tennis player Jodie Burrage has been subjected to online abuse and death threats following her first-round defeat at the Chennai Open. The 27-year-old, who is currently ranked 474th in the world, was making her return to WTA Tour singles action after a gap of 16 months but suffered an early exit from the tournament.

Burrage lost to India's Vaishnavi Adkar, who produced a strong comeback after dropping the opening set to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. However, the result was followed by a disturbing wave of abusive messages and threats directed at the British player on social media.
