India, July 26 -- Assam's flood situation has shown signs of improvement as water levels continue to recede in several districts. Despite this, over 6.54 lakh people remain affected across six districts, and the death toll has climbed to 66, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Officials said the absence of heavy overnight rainfall in parts of Upper Assam, including Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, has helped floodwaters recede. Authorities expect the situation to improve further, allowing relief operations to reach more affected areas.

The worst-hit districts are:

* Sivasagar: Nearly 2.9 lakh people affected* Charaideo: Around 1.9 lakh people affected* Jorhat: More than 1.3 lakh people affected
