India, Aug. 26 -- A routine mission to a remote military radar facility in western Alaska ended in tragedy after a chartered aircraft crashed during a landing attempt, killing all eight people aboard. Among the victims were a 23-year-old U.S. Air Force officer and two employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, officials said.

The Cessna 441, operated by Anchorage-based Security Aviation, crashed on August 20 near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, about 450 miles west-southwest of Anchorage. The aircraft carried two pilots and six passengers. Investigators said the crew attempted to land a second time as weather conditions deteriorated sharply.
