India, June 27 -- Not every controversial film becomes a blockbuster. Some never even make it to theatres. Over the years, several movies have run into trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), while others faced protests, court cases and public outrage that delayed or completely blocked their release in India.

Interestingly, many of these films went on to gain cult status despite the controversy surrounding them. Here are six films that were banned in India and created headlines long before audiences could watch them.
