India, July 29 -- Canada is intensifying its efforts to establish a trade agreement with the United States, with discussions led by Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette taking place in Washington. However, negotiations have already encountered major challenges as U.S. President Donald Trump has shown his lack of willingness to reconsider the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), maintaining that the U.S. is not reliant upon its North American trading partners. With the new tariffs on Canadian products slated to come into effect on August 19, Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking a broader trade deal that goes beyond CUSMA and covers tariffs impacting Canadian industries.
