India, May 19 -- The Supreme Court of India refused to stay its November 7 order directing the removal of stray dogs from public places, including hospitals, schools, and colleges. The court rejected pleas filed by animal lovers and welfare groups. While dismissing the pleas, the apex court stated that it cannot ignore serious cases where children, travellers, and elderly people have fallen victim to dog-bite incidents.

The court also highlighted the failure of state governments and Union Territories to implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, aimed at controlling the stray dog population.
