US, Oct. 9 -- "Compatibility" between partners is an important aspect of a lasting relationship; someone compatible with a person in every way is called a "soulmate". The tradition of arranged marriages in India was established with this compatibility in mind.

In Western cultures, the custom of dating allows people to learn about the personalities and various traits of their potential partners in order to establish an acceptable compatibility.

I would like to say that while strong compatibility is desirable to develop common interests for the couple, it has little to do with a long, stable relationship. Also, the requirements for a long relationship are more practical than romantic, and the concept of "soulmate" is a myth.
