New Delhi, Aug. 13 -- Parliament on Thursday approved the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha clearing the legislation a day after its passage in the Lok Sabha.

The Bill will now be sent to President Droupadi Murmu for her assent before it becomes law.The legislation seeks to reshape the gegulatory and taxation framework governing mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands, following the Supreme Court's landmark July 2024 ruling that recognised the power of state governments to levy taxes on mineral rights and lands containing minerals.
