LEH, Sept. 3 -- Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Thursday approved the notification for creation of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) in all seven districts of the Union Territory, completing the Centre's initiative announced on July 13, 2026.

The notification will extend the framework of elected local self-governance, earlier limited to Leh and Kargil, to the five newly created districts of Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass.

The L-G thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the decision, saying the establishment of seven councils would decentralise governance and strengthen people's participation in district-level planning and development.
