Jammu, Aug. 6 -- The recent spate of heavy rainfall and cloudbursts across Jammu and Kashmir has once again exposed the region's growing vulnerability to extreme weather events. On August 3 and 4, 2026, cloudbursts and torrential rains struck Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Ramban, Kathua, and Reasi in Jammu Division and in Pahalgam, Ganderbal, Shopian, Bandipora and Kupwara in Kashmir valley, besides in Kargil (Ladakh).
These incidents claimed several lives and caused widespread destruction of roads, bridges, houses and public infrastructure. According to reports, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed 36 cloudbursts so far this year, resulting in the loss of 31 lives.
