Nigeria, March 1 -- Iran may not take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, following rising tensions between Iran and the United States.
Over the weekend, conflict escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump approved airstrikes on Iran. Reports claim the strikes killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on U.S. military bases across the Middle East, including locations in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Israel.
