Bangladesh, April 25 -- West Bengal has set a historic benchmark in Indian democracy. In the first phase of the 2026 Assembly Elections held on Thursday, the state recorded an unprecedented voter turnout of nearly 93 per cent, the highest since independence.

With around 93 per cent turnout in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections throwing up "mixed signals", the contest between the BJP and the Trinamul Congress is all set to intensify.

While both parties sought to project the high turnout as working in their favour, strategists in both camps indicated that "it could go either way".
