Dhaka, Oct. 15 -- Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said that if the National Citizen Party (NCP) does not inform the Commission of its preferred election symbol from the list of symbols under the rules, the Commission will make a decision on its own.

He made the remark while speaking to reporters at the EC headquarters on Tuesday.

The EC Secretary said, "The NCP must inform the Commission of an alternative symbol by the 19th. Otherwise, the EC will decide at its own discretion.

The Commission believes that there is no need to include the Shapla (water lily) as a symbol."

He also added that the government will make the decision regarding a referendum, and the EC will act accordingly.
