Srinagar, Oct. 5 -- A nationwide alert has been issued after the deaths of at least 14 children in Madhya Pradesh, were linked to the consumption of a toxic cough syrup found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG) - a deadly industrial solvent used in brake fluid and antifreeze. The tragedy has triggered an emergency response from the Union Health Ministry, with multiple states banning the product and a central probe now underway.

The syrup in question, Coldrif, was manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Laboratory analysis by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Drug Control confirmed that the syrup contained 48.6% diethylene glycol - 480 times higher than the permissible limit of 0.10%.
