Srinagar, Sept. 22 -- Srinagar- The stray dog population within the jurisdiction of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) was estimated at 64,416 in a scientific survey conducted in 2023, while 15,266 dogs have been sterilised since June that year, the government informed the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

The figures were provided in response to a starred question raised by Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq regarding the growing stray dog population in Srinagar and other urban areas, dog-bite incidents and measures being taken to address related public-safety concerns.
