The first thing Kashmir teaches a visitor is this: the famous picture rarely tells the full story.

Travel brochures present the same frame every season. A shikara glides through Dal Lake. Snow gathers on Gulmarg's slopes. Tourists crowd the cafes of Pahalgam with phones raised toward the mountains.

These places deserve their fame, and each one still holds enormous beauty. Still, Kashmir reveals its true character far away from packed parking lots and crowded markets.

A different Kashmir waits beyond the postcard.
