A PhD is supposed to be the world's hardest promise to keep.

A scholar spends years chasing a question nobody has answered, then defends the answer in front of experts who are paid to doubt it.

That promise built the research engines of America, Germany, and Japan, and it is the promise India has staked its future on through its Viksit Bharat 2047 ambitions.

Judged by numbers, India is delivering. Doctoral enrollment has surged across science, engineering, management, and the humanities over the past two decades, and thousands of scholars now work in fields that barely existed at Indian universities a generation ago.
