Srinagar, Sept. 22 -- Srinagar- Around 51,000 cancer cases are currently registered in Jammu and Kashmir, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to a question by MLA Mir Saifullah, Itoo said an Apex Committee has been constituted to guide the government and formulate measures for cancer prevention, screening and treatment in the Union Territory.

The Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has been designated as the Nodal Officer for coordinating the initiative.

She said gastrointestinal, lung and breast cancers account for a significant proportion of malignancies reported in the region.
