Nigeria, June 22 -- UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as leader of the Labour Party and prime minister, ending a turbulent period marked by mounting pressure from within his party. In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he had listened to the views of Labour members and lawmakers on his leadership and had decided to step aside.

"I have heard the answer and I accept it with good grace," he said.

Starmer's resignation follows weeks of internal unrest within the Labour Party after poor electoral performances and growing calls from MPs and senior party figures for a change in leadership.
