Dhaka, Feb. 12 -- BNP candidate Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed has unofficially won the Dhaka-8 parliamentary seat, defeating his nearest rival Nasiruddin Patwari by more than 5,000 votes.

The result was announced by Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharafuddin Ahmed Chowdhury in the early hours of Friday, at around 3:45 am.

According to the Returning Officer, Mirza Abbas received 56,552 votes from polling centres, along with 2,814 postal votes, bringing his total vote count to 59,366.

His closest competitor, NCP's Mohammad Nasiruddin Patwari, secured 51,572 votes from the centres and an additional 2,555 postal votes, giving him a total of 54,127 votes.

Mirza Abbas ultimately won by a margin of 5,239 votes.
