Dhaka, Dec. 8 -- The Detective Branch (DB) of police detained the secretary general of the Janata Party of Bangladesh, Shawkat Mahmud, from his Malibag residence in the capital on Sunday.

Mahmud was also a former vice-chairman of BNP and a former president of the National Press Club.

Deputy Commissioner of police Talebur Rahman said a team of DB police arrested Mahmud in the afternoon. The official could not provide the details in which cases he was arrested.
