LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 -- The television set in millions of American living rooms once belonged, in part, to Shelley Fabares.

Fabares died Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 82. Her family confirmed the news; the cause of death was not disclosed.

She was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1944 and began appearing on television at age ten, with her first credit on "The Loretta Young Show." It was a precocious start that proved less an anomaly than a statement of intent. What followed was a career of unusual staying power, unfolding across seven decades and three distinct configurations of American entertainment, each of which found a use for her and each of which she navigated without visible strain.
