New Delhi, July 12 -- TORONTO - Two people were killed and at least four others wounded when a gunman opened fire on the crowd at the TD Salsa on St. Clair festival on Saturday night, turning Canada's largest Latin street festival into a crime scene and leaving Toronto police hunting for a suspect who disappeared into the surrounding neighborhood before officers could close the perimeter.

12 p.m. local time on St. Clair Avenue West at Arlington Avenue in Midtown Toronto, where tens of thousands of people had gathered for the 22nd consecutive year the festival has filled the street. Festival-goers heard gunfire, and what had been a celebration of Latin dance and culture became a scramble for safety within seconds.
