Canada Cancels US Joint Ceremony for Gordie Howe Bridge as Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs
New Delhi, July 22 -- WINDSOR - Canada will mark the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge alone. The joint ceremony planned with the United States has been cancelled, Ottawa confirmed Tuesday, a casualty of the 50 percent tariffs President Trump announced on most Canadian goods, turning a bridge conceived as a symbol of interdependence into a marker of how far the bilateral relationship has deteriorated.
Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson's office confirmed Tuesday that a joint celebration with American counterparts "would be inappropriate" given the state of the trade relationship. Canada will hold its own ceremony on July 24. The bridge opens to commercial and passenger traffic on July 27.
