
New Delhi, Sept. 11 -- The week of 6-10 September saw India's technology story move decisively beyond AI experimentation. From a Rs.70,000-crore data-centre plan and a semiconductor lab to AI agents entering UPI and enterprises putting governance under the microscope, the focus is shifting to the infrastructure, data and operating models needed to make AI work at scale.
1. TCS plans Rs.70,000-crore AI data-centre campus in Hyderabad
Tata Consultancy Services subsidiary HyperVault and its partners plan to invest up to Rs.70,000 crore to develop a 1GW AI data-centre campus in Telangana. The project, designed for high-density GPU workloads and hyperscalers, underlines the growing race to build India's physical infrastructure for frontier AI.
TCS also launched an Industrial Autonomy & Engineering Lab in Pune that demonstrates AI-led manufacturing using robotics, digital twins and industrial AI. The "lights-out" model is designed to show how factories can increasingly operate with minimal human intervention, while allowing manufacturers to test autonomous systems before deploying them on live production lines
2. Swiggy turns to Snowflake to unify data at scale
Swiggy has adopted Snowflake as a unified data foundation across food delivery, Instamart and Dineout, with Apache Iceberg providing a central analytical layer. The company says its slowest data workflows have accelerated by 90-96%, with some queries falling from two hours to 15 minutes-showing where enterprise AI gains increasingly depend on fixing the data layer first.
3. Wipro says AI has freed capacity equivalent to 20,000 employees
Wipro says its AI initiatives have generated productivity equivalent to the output of 20,000 employees, with the capacity redeployed elsewhere rather than directly replacing workers. More than 100,000 employees have received advanced AI training as Wipro shifts towards a "human-AI operating model"-but the bigger test remains whether productivity translates into revenue and margins.
4. NPCI works on AI-agent authorisation for UPI
NPCI is developing protocols to identify and authorise AI agents operating on UPI, potentially laying the groundwork for autonomous payments. The move could eventually allow agents to make routine purchases on behalf of users, but authentication, liability and controls will become critical as machines move from recommending transactions to executing them.
5. India's enterprise AI spending jumps 119%, governance lags
Indian enterprises increased AI investment by 119% over the past year, according to ServiceNow, with AI now accounting for 16.6% of average IT budgets and projected to reach 21.3% by 2027. Yet only 22% have formal AI testing, auditing or risk-assessment processes, highlighting a widening gap between AI spending and AI governance.
6. HCLTech puts Rs.185 crore into advanced semiconductor lab
HCLTech has opened a 40,000 sq ft Advanced Semiconductor Lab in Bengaluru, including 25,000 sq ft of high-grade cleanrooms, with an investment of Rs.185 crore. The facility expands India's capabilities in post-silicon engineering, testing, validation and failure analysis as the country attempts to build a deeper semiconductor ecosystem.
7. Whatfix appoints Vara Kumar as CEO
Enterprise software company Whatfix appointed co-founder Vara Kumar as CEO, effective immediately, following the death of co-founder and former CEO Khadim Batti on 1 September. Kumar, who co-founded Whatfix with Batti in 2014 and has led product and research, will now oversee the company's next phase of growth.
8. Mahindra Finance scales Sarvam voice AI to 10 million calls
Mahindra Finance is expanding its partnership with Indian AI company Sarvam, with voice AI agents handling more than one crore calls across sales, collections and employee engagement in 12 Indian languages. The deployment is notable because it moves sovereign, multilingual AI from demonstration projects into a large-scale financial-services workflow.
9. BCCL partners with OpenAI on news discovery
Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd, publisher of The Times of India and The Economic Times, has partnered with OpenAI to improve discovery of its journalism through ChatGPT. The agreement puts attribution and access to original Indian reporting at the centre of a growing conversation about how generative AI and publishers will coexist.
10. OpenAI and Samsung deepen work on AI chips
OpenAI said it is working with Samsung Electronics on next-generation chips while expanding enterprise AI cooperation. Although no new agreement was announced, the development highlights how the AI race is increasingly extending beyond models into memory, specialised silicon and the infrastructure required to run them at scale.
11. Salesforce and software stocks face renewed AI disruption fears
Salesforce, ServiceNow and other software stocks came under pressure after the release of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, as investors reassessed whether increasingly capable AI could disrupt traditional enterprise software. The sell-off is an important signal for India's IT-services sector too, where the long-term question is shifting from whether enterprises will adopt AI to how much conventional software and services work AI can absorb.
12. India's data-centre boom enters an AI-powered phase
India's colocation data-centre capacity has grown fivefold in five years to about 2GW and could reach 10GW by 2031, according to a Jefferies report cited by Financial Express. AI workloads and data-localisation requirements are driving the expansion, but power, cooling, water and the availability of suitable infrastructure could become the next constraints.
Taken together, the week's developments point to a clear shift: India's AI story is moving from experimentation to execution. The next phase will be determined less by how many companies announce AI pilots and more by who can build the data, compute, semiconductor, governance and workforce foundations needed to make those pilots economically meaningful.
