Motorcycles for wildlife officers
Srilanka, Sept. 6 -- The Department of Wildlife Conservation has distributed 294 motorcycles to strengthen the field capacity of wildlife officers and improve responses to the human-elephant conflict, Deputy Minister of Environment, Anton Jayakody said.
According to the Deputy Minister, the initiative forms part of a broader national effort to address Sri Lanka's long-standing human-elephant conflict through scientific and practical measures rather than short-term interventions.
He said the conflict was not merely an environmental issue but a complex socio-economic problem that had been intensified over decades by unplanned land use, the obstruction of elephant corridors and the effects of climate change.
