Sri Lanka, Nov. 30 -- With heavy rains swelling the Kalu River, the authorities carried out a clean-up of the river's estuary yesterday morning to improve water flow and protect the sandbank from potential damage.

The Coastal Conservation Department and the Department of Irrigation jointly removed silt accumulated near the sandbank as an immediate measure to facilitate drainage.

The operation was overseen by the Kalutara District Secretary, the District Irrigation Engineer, and officials from the Kalutara Disaster Management Centre, who were on site to coordinate the efforts.
