Govt reviews targets, failures in rural water projects
Sri Lanka, June 7 -- The Government has launched a review of Sri Lanka's community-based water supply schemes amid concerns over project failures, technical shortcomings and allegations of financial mismanagement, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Sunil Ranasinghe said.
Minister Dr. Ranasinghe said that while many schemes are functioning successfully, a significant number face operational and structural challenges requiring urgent intervention.
He said community water supply schemes are implemented through multiple channels, including the Community Water Supply Department under the Ministry, Local Government bodies such as Pradeshiya Sabhas, and Non-Governmental Organisations. Of these, around 4,000 projects are man...
