Sri Lanka, Sept. 28 -- A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed before the Supreme Court by 170 police officers, challenging the recent promotions of 51 Chief Inspectors to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). The petitioners said their rights were violated through promotions made on the basis of a limited competitive examination in 2021 and a subsequent board interview in 2024.

According to them, nearly 200 officers who sat for the 2021 examination conducted by the Department of Examinations, with the support of the Police Examinations Division, were informed that they had passed, yet no marks were released.
