New Delhi, Dec. 10 -- Indian Railways reported a significant decrease in train accidents, reducing from 135 in 2014-15 to 31 in 2024-25 and further to 10 in 2025-26 (up to November).

The average number of consequential train accidents from 2004-14 was 171 per year, which highlights the improved safety measures. The Accidents Per Million Train Kilometre (APMTKM) dropped from 0.11 to 0.03, marking a 73% enhancement in safety.

Investment in safety-related activities rose from Rs 39,463 crore in 2014-15 to over Rs 1.16 lakh crore in 2025-26. Various advanced systems, including electrical interlocking at 6,656 stations and the Kavach safety system, were implemented to mitigate human error.
